Movie Review: Despicable Me 3

Gru and the guys are back! The excitement when that yellow envelope came through the door, I swear I ran around speaking in Minion. Yup I’m a big kid at heart.
I have a thing, when I love a movie or a character I will not watch a trailer for it as I don’t want it spoilt (trailers are like mini movies). And that is what I did with this new movie in the series, but this time for different reasons. It wasn’t that I wanted to go in with fresh eyes, it was because I was living in hope that it wouldn’t be anything like The Minions movie, which was a flop to me because it wasn’t funny and it was quite frankly boring.

Parents this is one for us, but drag the kids out of their beds away from their sugary cereal and pretend that it’s for them.
If you grew up in the 80’s and now have kids who are messing your head up with social media and and those spinning things, this is your chance to show them what you grew up on. The Super Villain is an ex child TV star from the 80’s who like many of us is stuck in the past. He wears an MC Hammer Suit, chews bubble gum and has dance offs to 80’s pop classics! There is so much in this movie that you will need to sit down with your kids and explain the relevance to them.

The Despicable Me series has been extremely consistent in providing fun, laughter, adventure and that squishy feeling inside. The squishy feeling in most part due to the relationship between Gru and the guuurrrrlllsss (as he affectionately calls them). The growth of this relationship and the underlying message that it sends to children and parents alike is beautiful orchestrated throughout the series. This time around we see the relationship take on a new challenge in the acceptance of Lucy (Gru’s secret agent partner and now wife) as the Guuurrrrlllsss mother. This whole scenario works so well as subplot… I don’t remember children’s cartoons having subplots when I was growing up.

Laughs a plenty! The children in our screening were kept completely enthralled by the jokes, hi-jinks and colours (this film is so colourful!) throughout the hour and a half which is very important if you yourself don’t want to miss any of the film. They were so taken by it that they sat through the end credits which we are sure was a nod to the 80’s cartoon and computer game Spy Vs Spy.

The Despicable Me series shows no signs of stopping anytime so and for that we are as excited as Agnes is about Unicorns.
