New from Amazon TV is the 10 episode series Mad Dogs which follows the misadventures of 5 college buddies when they come together for a reunion at their millionaire friends mansion in Belize.
Starring British actor Ben Chaplin (seriously wouldn’t have known he was British if it wasn’t for IMDB) as Joel, Michael Imperioli (who was a regular in Spike Lee movies throughout the 90’s) as Lex, Romany Malco (probably best known for his role in 40 Year Old Virgin) as Gus, Steve Zahn (best known for everything you won’t remember as he generally plays the mouthy background guy) as Cobi, and Bill Zane as Milo. As far as groups of friends go this is probably the most diverse (and probably a little far fethed) as they go. These guys just don’t seem like they would be friends as there doesn’t seem to be any common denominator that ties them. This also becomes an apparent and important hook for the show as the story plays out.
Within the first 12 minutes of scene setting you are given the impression that the Island of Belize isn’t exactly welcoming to strangers. The life of a millionaire isn’t as simple as it should probably be and that something darker is waiting to happen. And all of this is pretty hooking alongside the dark comedy of the script.
I’d probably best describe this as The Hangover meets Breaking Bad, is it as good as either of them? Well we’ll see when we get to the end of accidentally binge watching the entire season.
